The Power of Logic

I’m quite relieved, happy in fact, that my MA degree requires a course on logic and argumentation. In a world saturated with information, it is an absolute necessity to build a mental framework for sorting it all out. Yes, a proper worldview is vital. And getting the worldview thing down right should never be compromised. But the operating system upon which one organizes information within one’s worldview – that is, logic – is almost as important.
It’s possible for Christians to build a sound theology from revelation without having a formal knowledge of the biblical languages, just as it is possible for a child to lay bricks in shape for the foundation of a large house without a knowledge of masonry. But is that an ideal situation? If it was our house, would we want an experienced mason laying our foundation, or a child? And if it was our belief system, our religion, our faith that was being articulated and defended, would we want a godly scholar doing the work, or someone else?
The good news is…it can be fun refining those vital skills! Test your deduction. Mr. Reilly, his sister, his daughter and his son enjoy golf. They play together all the time. The following statements are true of the four:
- The best player’s twin and the worst player are of the opposite sex.
- The best player and the worst player are the same age.
Who is the best player?
The next one will be more challenging…and there may be a free book involved for the winner…
